Mac game publisher Aspyr Media has, at long last, posted a demo version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the hit first-person shooter.

Developed for the PC by Id Software and published by Activision, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was converted to the Mac by Westlake Interactive and released earlier this year. It’s been an enormously popular release for Aspyr despite the lack of a demo version, but now with the end of the year approaching, the company has offered a playable demo version to help give people a taste of what they can expect from the full game.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter, a 3D action game set during World War II. You assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, an O.S.A. agent sent deep into German territory to help infiltrate and overthrow a covert plot instigated by Reich SS leader Heinrich Himmler that combines technology and the occult. Himmler’s plan is to create an army of super soldiers against which the Allies will have no defense, and it’s up to Blazkowicz to uncover the plot and put and end to it. In typical bombastic Id Software style, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is non-stop action from start to finish, and combines elements of history with horrific fantasy, too — if you’re not blasting SS officers and Wehrmacht grunts, you’re fighting shambling hordes of zombies or bloodthirsty demons raised from beyond the grave.
System requirements call for a PowerPC G3/500MHz or faster; Mac OS 9.2 or later with virtual memory active, or Mac OS X 10.1 or later; 128MB RAM (256 for OS X); and ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better graphics card.
The full game features an extensive single player mission campaign and multiplayer capabilities too. The demo version is limited to two single-player missions and no multiplayer action, but it should give you an idea of what the game is like if you haven’t played it up until now. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
You can download the demo from Macgamefiles.com. It measures in at around 108MB, so make sure to grab it using a high-speed connection or be prepared to wait a while.
