Alias|Wavefront has announced the release of a free public beta version of Mental Ray for Maya 1.5, software that provides users of Maya with an alternative rendering engine. It’s available for download from Alias|Wavefront’s Web site now.

First announced in October as a free add-on for Maya 4.5, the Mental Ray plug-in provides users with new rendering capabilities. Mental Ray provides more advanced lighting and more photo-realistic rendering effects than Maya can produce using its own built-in rendering engine.
Available for free, Mental Ray for Maya 1.5 public beta version is useable by licensed Maya 4.5 customers, according to Alias|Wavefront. More details are available from the Web site.
