The FireWire to EIDE hardware RAID sub-system, dubbed the MacRAID 280FW, features an on-board RAID controller creating a completely self contained RAID sub-system, capable of taking a large load off the Mac host’s CPU, according to General Manager Troy Lassoe.
“The new MacRAID 280FW series can be configured in minutes, and plugs into any host’s FireWire port while being completely transparent and driver free,” he said. “This allows Mac users to simply plug in 80GB to 640GB of storage where needed, no matter which Mac operating system they’re using.”
The MacRAID 280FW series features four hot swappable EIDE drives, independent fault isolation, and a rebuild feature that automatically regenerates data when a failed disk is replaced. It also has built-in fault tolerance and a hot-spare feature, allowing the unit to continue functioning even after two hard disks have failed simultaneously.
MacRAID can be set up in minutes from a push button panel on the front of the unit to run RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3 or 5. Prices range from US$3,497 for the 80GB model to $4,797 for the 640GB model. Government, educational and volume discounts are available.
