Crywolf Computers and Noren Products have announced pricing for their CoolMac Silencer enclosures that are designed to make Power Mac towers and Xserves run cooler and quieter. See our January 3 article for details.

The folks at Crywolf and Noren say that the CoolMac Silencer reduces the noise of an Xserve from 82 dB to 38 dB and a Power Mac G4 from 65 dB to 37 dB. The CoolMac Silencer product family begins with the gCab and xCab. The gCab is a solution for customers who need the computing power of a Power Mac G4 and the industrial strength of Mac OS X but must work in environments requiring near silence, such as a sound or video production studio.
Costs are US$699 for the gCab, $899 for gCab Studio, $1699 for the xCab, and $1,899 for xCab Pro. There are various options, as well, including internal lights, heavy duty casters, door locks, and more.
The CoolMac systems are designed to fit under a desk — as long as each side is at least six inches from the side of a desk or a wall, according to Kevin Langdon, president of Crywolf. They’re made of a composite alloy with three barriers of foam inside.
“The CoolMac Silencers use heat pipe technology with a core that absorbs heat and transfers it outside the box,” David Marion of Noren told MacCentral. “And they trap the sound of the Macs’ fans inside the box. With their protected environment, the enclosures also keep Macs running cooler and cleaner as they protect them from dust.”
The enclosures are heavy (about 180 pounds) and, by necessity, bulky (starting at 25.75 by 24 by 25.5 inches) Marion said when you buy one, it’s like buying a “little room” for your Mac. They may be heavy but they eliminate tangled cabling problems and are energy efficient, using only about as much energy as a 20-watt lightbulb.
The CoolMac enclosures also have a pull-out CPU drawer, so you can slid your Mac in and out for attaching peripherals, inserting CDs/DVDs, etc. They come in black, charcoal, or silver finishes.
