X11 for Mac OS X was publicly unveiled by Apple yesterday. The software, now in public beta, enables users to run the X-Windows graphical interface side-by-side with Mac OS X. What’s more, Apple has provided a developer kit to facilitate the conversion of UNIX applications to Mac OS X as well.
OpenOSX products that use X-Windows include OpenOSX Gimp, OpenOSX Grass GIS, OpenOSX Office and OpenOSX FilmGimp, the latest addition to the product line. OpenOSX said the software exhibits “dramatic performance and aesthetic improvements” using X11 for Mac OS X as compared to other X-Windows on OS X efforts like OroborOSX and XDarwin. The company said it’ll continue to develop, market and support its own XFree product for people who what a legacy installation of X-Windows, if you’d prefer to use XFree instead of X11 for Mac OS X for some reason.
