Maya is an industry-standard 3D rendering and animation package that was once limited to use with Windows and Irix-based systems. Alias|Wavefront changed that last year when it introduced a Mac OS X-native version of Maya, and has followed up with the release of Maya 4.5 Complete on the Macintosh. Since Mac OS X 10.2.3’s release, however, some Maya users have had trouble. MacCentral has received an acknowledgement of the issue from Maya’s Mac product manager.

Maya for Mac OS X was first made available in September, 2001. Maya Complete 4.5
to Mac users at Macworld Expo New York in July, 2002. The new version of Maya synchronized the Mac version with its non-Mac counterparts, introducing new modeling tools, integrated 3D Paint, multiprocessor support for rendering, and a host of enhancements to the user interface and workflow.
Since then Alias|Wavefront has released the Mac version of Maya 4.5 Personal Learning Edition, a free feature-limited version of the software that enables neophyte to 3D editing to learn how Maya works, along with a public beta release of the
mental ray for Maya 1.5
plug-in, a new rendering engine that some Maya users prefer to the one included with Maya itself.
“We are aware that some Mac 10.2.3 users have been experiencing problems,” said Paul Dyck, Maya on the Mac Product Manager, Alias|Wavefront. “Our QA team is working on this with Apple and we know that it is confined to a few graphics cards. We will post more information on a fix to our web site as soon as we know more.”
