Mike Wendland, a columnist for the Detroit Free Press , is a longtime Windows user, but he’s made the switch to the Mac platform, at least partially. Wendland tells why in a new column entitled, Apple’s looks, functions convert this PC devotee.
He didn’t plan to switch, but was slowly converted after testing Mac OS X on a variety of iBooks, iMacs and Power Mac G4s. The US$999 iBook was the first Mac to begin winning him over and when he finally bought a 1GHz dual processor Power Mac G4 and a 17-inch flat-screen monitor, his five-month-old Dell Dimension 8200 system “got pushed aside like a jilted lover.”
What made him switch when the columnist writes that his Windows machine was faster? “What my Mac lacks in speed it makes up for in elegance,” Wendland said. “The Mac just doesn’t feel like a machine. It’s clean and crisp and tactile.”
He’s also a fan of Microsoft’s Office v. X, Apple’s new Safari Web browser, and Apple’s iApps. Wendland still plans to use his Dell as he likes it and Windows XP.
“But I love my Mac — though it does pose a unique problem for me,” he writes. “For years on radio and in my NBC News Channel reports, I’ve been known as PC Mike. So I’ll explain that PC really stands for Personal Computer. For indeed, my new love for my Mac is very personal.”
