Neon Software Inc. has released a free update for NetMinder Ethernet 5.0 for Mac OS X. The update is designed to let the product identify which network computers abuse network resources by downloading audio and video files that can waste Internet connection bandwidth.
NetMinder Ethernet is US$795 network diagnostic and security software. Bandwidth abuse joins the list of problems identified by Neon Software’s Packet Inference engine, which automatically discovers network problems and security risks, such as port scans, denial of service attempts, duplicate IP addresses, and worms and viruses. Once a problem is discovered, users can be notified via e-mail, pager or SNMP trap.
The update is available today and requires NetMinder Ethernet 5.0 and Mac OS X version 10.1 or higher. The update includes two files: version 4.8 of Neon Software’s Packet Inference plug-in and an editable text file that includes a list of multimedia file extensions that trigger the alert, including .MP3, .MPEG, and .MOV.
