Despite Apple’s efforts to drive prices on its consumer machines down, Martinez noted that the premium you’re likely to pay between an iMac and an HP box may be worth the price. “The iMac takes up much less space — and is prettier to boot,” he said.
The big expense, he said, is in the cost of re-buying software you’ll need when you switch. “But if you’re serious about managing media simply and saving time, and you’re ready to forsake the often-byzantine paths of the PC world, read on,” he suggested.
Martinez compared getting a PC to work with media files to “dancing with an elephant, and the elephant is leading.” But doing so with a Mac — whether it’s making movies, burning DVDs, using digital photos or music — is more like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
There are other reasons to consider making a switch to Mac, according to Martinez. PowerBooks and iBooks have better battery life than their Wintel counterparts, according to Martinez, and Apple leads the way in easy-to-use wireless networking. PowerBooks and iBooks are smaller and lighter than comparably priced or equipped PC laptops, too.
