AJA Video Systems is now shipping the Kona-HD — a video/audio capture card designed specifically for video producers working with Mac OS X. The 10-bit uncompressed HD capture card enables you to grab video using QuickTime-based software like Final Cut Pro or Adobe After Effects.

Kona-HD supports most HDTV formats, including 1080i50/59.94/60. It also supports 1080psf23.84/24, used by the film industry. The PCI card is 66MHz and 64 bit, and works well with Apple’s Xserve, according to AJA Video Systems — free of disk transfer rate problems if used with Ultra-320 SCSI hard disks. It’s downwardly compatible with 33MHz PCI and 8-bit HD formats, too.
Kona-HD also features 6-channel AES I/O at 48 or 96KHz, for audio input and output. Because it uses AES inputs, the card sports the ability to connect non-sync or off-speed digital audio without clicks and pops. Kona-HD also features genlock for synchronization to an external reference.
Kona-HD joins the Kona-SD model — a standard definition video and audio capture card that has been shipping since April 2002. The card was developed in cooperation with Blackmagic Design, which created the QuickTime drivers. Kona-HD carries a suggested retail price of US$10,995.
