Apple’s games site has turned its attention this week to Master of Orion III, the forthcoming epic strategy game from MacSoft.

Developed by Quicksilver Software, Master of Orion III was recently announced as being at Gold Master status — the last step before a game is sent to duplication, for distribution on store shelves. The PC game will be on store shelves later in February, and hopefully the Mac version — currently making its final changes at Quicksilver — will be close behind.
In Master of Orion III, you take control of one of 15 different alien civilizations vying for control of the cosmos, through diplomatic, colonial, and political means. Quicksilver’s Bill Fisher told Apple’s Brad Cook that their goal was to create “a ‘living’ empire,” in which players become immersed in not just the overriding issues that affect the game, but the individual personalities of the characters within the game too.
There are three ways to win the game, according to Cook: Become President of your civilization; defeat other empires through conquest; or look for mysterious “Antaran X’s” spread throughout various planets.
Whether you’re the kind of player who likes to micromanage your game, or the sort of strategy buff that prefers to take the “big picture” into account, “MOO III allows you to play your way, thanks to the robust AI at the heart of the game,” according to Cook.
