The Kona SD is a video capture card aimed at video professionals. It’s an uncompressed 10-bit PCI video card capable of doing real-time effects. The card, which works with QuickTime, features fully digital SDI video connections, 6 channels of 48/96 Khz AES/EB digital audio with sample rate conversion on each input, and much more. The card works natively in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.
The Kona SD 2.4 software update, offered to Kona SD users at no charge, provides the capability to do real-time color treatment which can be added to any clip in an edit. The Blackmagic RT Color Corrector features independent red, green and blue control in lift, gamma and gain.
What’s more, Kona SD 2.4 also provides the ability to capture, playback and render Digital Voodoo 8 and 10 bit QuickTime video. The card and software also support uncompressed video formats used by Pinnacle CineWave, Blackmagic DeckLink and Viewgraphics Video Pump.
Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty explained the importance of real-time color correction. “Render based color correction just won’t cut it in a heavy production environment because you just have to see the color corrector video on the broadcast monitor as you work,” he said.
A joint development between AJA Video and Blackmagic Design, the Kona SD is available for US$3,295. The 2.4 software is a free update for registered users.
