Following a successful beta test launch recently, Mac game publisher Freeverse Software today announced that it’s now offering release versions of the Freeverse Board Game series — a collection of eight games offered as freeware, to encourage Mac gamers to use Freeverse’s GameSmith online gaming service.

The game collection includes 4 in a Row, a Connect-four style game; 7th Fleet, Freeverse’s answer to Battleship; Draughts, or checkers; Chess; Go; Mancala, the African game of stones; Reversi; and Tic Tac Toe. Each board game makes use of Freeverse’s “Emotidolls” technology — a new way of conveying emotions online.
Each game requires two players, hence the use of the GameSmith service. GameSmith not only provides player matching, but also offers ranking and statistic information as well.
Each game is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 or later, and runs natively in Mac OS X as well. You’ll need a networked opponent to play. Freeverse said that support for Jaguar’s Rendezvous zero-configuration networking technology will also be offered.
