FireWire Depot said the new enclosure is aimed at banks, insurance providers, government agencies, health care companies, IP developers and anyone else who needs to protect their sensitive data.
The drive chassis itself features FireWire and USB 2.0 interfaces, and can be used to convert any 3.5 inch IDE hard disk drive into an external device. The product uses an external security key to authenticate its use. FireWire Depot said that the new drive is device driver free, and is compatible with Mac OS 9.0.4 and later, and various flavors of Windows. The drive also includes an external DC power adapter.
The backplane of the new drive enclosure features two FireWire connectors, a USB 2.0 connector, a power connector, and a connector for the security key. Two security keys are included with the drive.
The retail price for the SuperGuard 3 is US$139. FireWire Depot expects them to ship this week.
