.Mac account holders now have access to a new version of Virex, the anti-virus protection software from McAfee. Optimized for Mac OS X, the new version, Virex 7.2, adds eUpdate — once again enabling Virex users to automatically update their Virex virus definitions, a feature lost when Virex transitioned from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. The new version is available for download from .Mac now.

.Mac is Apple’s subscription-based service for Mac users. It’s a suite of software and Internet services that offer the ability to store, share, and protect your data. As part of the .Mac service, Apple offers free access to certain software, including Virex.
Up until now, the Mac OS X-native versions of Virex that have been distributed by .Mac have required users to manually download and install virus definition files. Virus definition files are updated regularly, so unless .Mac users were vigilant in making sure the latest version was installed, it was easily possible to fall behind.
.Mac’s release of Virex 7.2 is aimed at English-speaking users; .Mac continues to distribute a Japanese version of Virex 7.1, and noted that a Japanese version of Virex 7.2 should be available shortly.
