Enterprise integration middleware developer OpenLink Software Inc. has announced the public beta release of Virtuoso 3.0, which it bills as a “Virtual Database” for SQL, XML and Web services. The software works on multiple platforms, including Mac OS X.

Virtuoso is a multi-protocol and multi-purpose server. The software implements Web, database and application server functionality with native XML storage, and Universal Data Access middleware. The software supports XML, XPATH, XSL-T, SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, WebDAV, SMTP, SQL-92, ODBC, JDBC, and OLE-DB.
In addition to Mac OS X, Virtuoso 3.0 is also available for Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems.
Virtuoso 3.0 is anticipated for a commercial release during the first week of March, 2003. Pricing is determined by the number of users per server CPU. More details are available from the OpenLink Web site.
