Blackmagic Design has released a public beta software upgrade for its standard definition (SD) television products to add real-time 10-bit color correction.

The company explained that 10-bit color correction increases color accuracy by four times, providing for higher video quality to be color-corrected in real time. The capability eliminates image banding that can occur with 8-bit color correction.
Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty claims that color correction in 10-bit is not found on any other non-linear video editing system. “Considering all video content requires color treatment at some point in the production pipeline, our upgrading color correction to true 10-bit is an critical feature for the television industry,” said Petty.
The public beta of the color corrector update is available for download from the Blackmagic Web site.
