Alessandro Levi Montalcini has updated his USB Overdrive software to v1.4. USB Overdrive is a universal USB driver for mice, trackballs, and game controllers, and this release is specifically aimed at Mac OS 9x and Mac OS X’s “Classic” environment. (The current version of USB Overdrive X is 10.2.2.)

The new version now supports mousewheel scrolling in Classic applications. Even if you use USB Overdrive X, you’ll need this version to be installed separately in your Classic environment if you want to be able to program mice and other input devices.
When running USB Overdrive v1.4 in Mac OS 9, you’ll now see a “Use Global Settings” command. USB Overdrive v1.4 also supports Logitech’s MX500 and MX700 8-button mice, Microsoft’s Sidewinder Strategic Commander (a left-handed game controller), GyroPoint devices, and other changes.
USB Overdrive is distributed as shareware. It costs US$20 to register.
