Documents To Go from DataViz (203/268-0030, https://www.dataviz.com ) gave Mac users the ability to store and read Word, Excel, and other files on any Palm OS-based device. With the latest version of the handheld program, you not only can take it with you, but you can also edit.
Documents To Go 3.0 Professional Edition lets you make and save changes on documents stored on a Palm, Visor, or other handheld device. The new version of Documents To Go is available now for $50.
You can drag-and-drop files from your desktop to the Professional Edition folder, using synching technology to send documents to your PDA. Documents To Go compresses documents so that they fit on a handheld; a 40K Word file, for example, is slimmed down to 16K using Documents To Go. Saved files can be synched back to your desktop.
Documents To Go 3.0 gives you a couple options for saving documents that you edit on your handheld; you can overwrite the existing document or save it as an entirely new file. That’s important, since Documents To Go retains some formatting, but doesn’t have enough memory to re-create elaborate document formats.
The program just allows you to edit files using graffiti or your device’s keypad; you can’t create or use it to create new documents from scratch.
“We’re not trying to be a full word processor application on the Palm,” says DataViz spokeswoman Erin O’Connor.
Professional Edition’s editing capabilities require more memory than earlier versions of Documents To Go — about 400K, DataViz says. For Documents To Go users who don’t want the added capabilities — and memory needs — of the Professional Edition, DataViz will continue to sell a $30 Standard Edition.
