Aimed at children ages 6 to 9, Star Wars Math: Jabba’s Game Galaxy is hosted by favorite Star Wars’ characters including Teemto, Sebulba, Jabba the Hutt, and Watto. The reward for all the brain work is building a spaceship and venturing out into the galaxy.
Each Star Wars Math game is based on an existing popular and familiar game. Dueling Dice, for example, is a simplified version of blackjack, using a pair of dice instead of cards. This game is fairly representative of all the Star Wars Math games in that there are easy ways to get around the problems. In the case of Dueling Dice, you simply count the number of tiny storm troopers on your screen to get the answer. This can be considered a strength or a weakness, depending on learning level: beginners won’t be intimidated, but kids who are familiar with the skills might not be challenged into strengthening them. Because Star Wars Math only has one level of learning (beginner), there are limited challenges for players.
Digotto is a lottery-style game hosted by Teemto in which four balls numbered from one to nine are drawn. The object of this game is to get as close as possible to a target number, while learning place values and probability along the way. Digotto is no ordinary math game, however: the numbered balls are charmingly endowed with legs and jiggle to the background music while holding their respective place values. A great exercise in chance, Digotto is the most addictive of the six games.
A small-scale version of checkers, Holochex is a game hosted by Jabba the Hutt. In place of the traditional black and red plastic game pieces, Holochex uses tiny, green, chest-thumping creatures, making each move and capture all the more dramatic. While this game doesn’t require math skills, it’s not easy, either: Jabba is a tough opponent, and winning requires logic and foresight. At Watto’s Junk Shop, you can cash in points earned from the games to purchase spaceship parts. The final activity is a real treat: you custom-build a spacecraft and print out your designs.
