Sony Electronics has introduced new AIT-1 and AIT-2 based StorStation drives. The new products are aimed at small to midsized businesses looking for tape backup subsystems. Sony’s product offerings include a FireWire model that is Mac-compatible, too.

AIT — or Advanced Intelligent Tape — is a high-capacity digital tape data format aimed at data protection and archival. Sony’s StorStation drives features capacities from 91 to 130GB, with transfer rates from 4 to 6MB per second.
Sony’s StorStation AITe90-UL model features dual connectivity for USB and FireWire. The new drive costs US$899. Alas, the bundled software is Windows-compatible only, but Dantz Development Corp.’s popular Retrospect software supports AIT drives (Retrospect is sold separately).
