MacMice, the folks who make “pretty toys for your Mac desktop,” have released the IceMate base stand for Griffin Technology’s PowerMate.

The US$45 PowerMate is a USB peripheral designed to serve as a volume knob, jog/shuttle wheel for digital video editing or scroll wheel for long documents. It can also be programmed for many other purposes too, using the included driver software. The precision machined acrylic base of the IceMate “dramatically” increases the level of blue light that the PowerMate emits onto a desk surface, as well as improves ergonomics, and adds physical stability, according to the MacMice.
The $19.99 IceMate is machined from a solid billet of Acrylite, an optically transparent acrylic, and is then thermally polished to a glossy sheen. Its upper recessed well accepts the PowerMate, holding it in place about 5/8-inch higher than normal. This permits better hand positioning while using the PowerMate, according to MacMice. And, the prism-like construction of the IceMate acts like a light amplifier, increasing the amount of blue light leaving the PowerMate and illuminating the surrounding desk surface.
