REBOL Technologies has announced the release of REBOL/Core 2.5.5 — the kernel of its REBOL distributed computing software and programming language. The developers note that the new version offers dozens of fixes since the 2.50 release and also provides new support for Mac OS X 10.2, “Jaguar.”

Billed as an “Internet operating system,” REBOL enables developers to build small, collaborative applications without requiring a large and complicated layer of technology underneath them. REBOL Technologies was founded in 1997 by CTO Carl Sassenrath. The architect of the Commodore Amiga operating system, Sassenrath also spent time in Apple’s own Advanced Technology Group.
This new version of REBOL/Core offers new functions, a new literal format for storing data, faster output conversion, better support for CGI and HTML, and myriad bug fixes. It also improves compatibility with other REBOL products, including REBOL/View, REBOL/Link, REBOL/SDK and more.
What’s more, REBOL/Core’s end user license agreement has been modified to allow the software to be used for free for commercial and educational purposes — so if you’d like to add another notch to your belt of programming tools, this might be a good opportunity.
REBOL/Core v2.5.5 is the first version to add support for Mac OS X, which REBOL Technologies announced earlier this year. Other REBOL products will follow suit later this year, according to the developer.
