Studio Boss is a project and client tracker targeted to freelance “creatives.” It uses the FileMaker Pro data engine to store, sort, and manage design, video, and photography projects, clients, activities, expenses, and invoices.
Studio Boss comes in two versions: regular and pro. The US$40 regular version is a standalone application for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.x users. Studio Boss Pro, which costs $250 and requires FileMaker Pro 5, is the same as the regular version except that it runs natively in FileMaker Pro and includes unlocked FileMaker source files. This means that Studio Boss can be customized and networked for multiple users in a studio environment, according to Dennis Best Design.
Both the regular and pro versions include: popup lists to store clients and other information for quick entry; search tools to find projects and clients; the ability to attach files and folders to jobs; storage for FTP and site passwords for each project; the capacity to store photos and video clips; task tracking; autosave; automatic invoice calculation for single or multiple projects; and the ability to import data from other sources. Studio Boss 3.6 and Studio Boss Pro 3.6 also come with a variety of ready-made forms (such as a proofing checklist and project summary), as well as new invoices and reports.
