FirewireDirect’s Vanguard line is a hardware-controlled FireWire RAID product that works with Macs and other platforms. The upgrade in capacity means that users can now get up to 500GB of striped RAID capacity in their systems.
RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. RAID systems spread out data on multiple hard disk mechanisms to either provide enhanced reliability, enhanced performance, or both. RAID Level 0, striping, spreads out block of data across multiple disks, thus improving performance. RAID Level 1, mirroring, writes the same data to two disks simultaneously. If one mechanism fails, the other still works, thus providing a constant, live backup.
Prices range from US$399 for just a bare enclosure without drive mechanisms to $1,299 for a fully loaded 500GB system.
