Few games in the annals of Mac history have had the impact or the staying power of Myth II: Soulblighter. The Myth series rewrote how real time strategy computer games were made by focusing attention on squad-based play and a detailed and immersive storyline and mythology. Varied forms of multiplayer gaming kept Myth II interesting long after the initial novelty wore off, and the availability of editing tools the gave rise to a veritable cottage industry of Myth artists and map makers. The game remains a popular diversion for many Mac gamers to this day, who up until recently have had to make do with running the game from Mac OS 9, since no OS X version of the game was available.
An updated version of Myth II: Soulblighter is now available — version 1.3.2. The new version has been Carbonized, allowing Mac gamers to run Myth on Mac OS X. Other changes have been made, too: Keyboard and mouse response has been improved, for example, and multiplayer gamers will experience reduced chat lag. What’s more, the updated version works on the PlayMyth.Net online gaming service, too, and it’s backwards-compatible with version 1.3.
Now, to get Myth II: Soulblighter v1.3.2 installed on your Mac, you’ll already need to have a valid Myth II installation on the disc — this isn’t the complete game. But if you have Myth II installed, you’re welcome to grab the 3.5MB download from MythDevelopers’ Web site.
Bear in mind that this version doesn’t support hardware-based graphics acceleration under Mac OS X — it’s a “significant undertaking” that will have to wait for a future version, according to the developers, since it’ll require a retooling for OpenGL. The good news is the team is already laying the groundwork for another significant update. Myth II: Soulblighter v1.4 is already in the works, and it’ll sport more than 100 enhancements, bug fixes and new features.
