NXN Software announced today that its alienbrain asset management system will gain support for OpenEXR, the recently released open source image file format developed by special effects studio Industrial Light & Magic. NXN will incorporate support for OpenEXR specifically into alienbrain VFX, a version of the asset management technology developed specifically for computer-generated film and visual effects production.

NXN supports various platforms with alienbrain, including Mac OS X. The developers note that alienbrain is designed as a complete start-to-finish asset management system, not just an archival system. OpenEXR is a high dynamic-range image file format that has already been used on major motion pictures. It provides greater color precision than other formats, supports different lossless compression algorithms, and can support new compression codecs and image types as well.
NXN alienbrain VFX will offer native support for thumbnailing, viewing and annotating image files in OpenEXR format, according to the developers. Current customers will receive a plug-in to support OpenEXR starting next month.
