Apple has posted iPod Software Update v1.2.6 to its Web site. The new update is recommended for all iPod users, and is available in separate downloads for Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and Windows operating systems.

The update improves battery management, according to Apple, thus solving a problem some iPod users have noticed that makes it appear that their iPod’s battery life decreases over time. Under those circumstances, the iPod would mistake a low voltage condition as evidence the battery was discharged, even though the battery could still power the iPod.
The update enables the iPod to more accurately manage its battery charge, thus using the battery’s entire capacity. Users affected by the problem who grab this update will see longer playback time and extended standby time, according to Apple — up to about 10 days of standby battery life on a full charge.
