If a “SuperDrive” has you craving a new Mac but you’re short of cash for a whole new machine, you may want to look at MCE Technologies LLC’s latest offerings. The company has announced a new lineup of internal DVD recordable upgrades for numerous Mac models.
MCE’s internal DVD-R upgrades include models suitable for the Power Mac G4, Power Mac G4 Cube, PowerBook G4, Power Mac G3, PowerBook G3 FireWire and Bronze Keyboard models, iBooks equipped with Dual USB interfaces, flat-panel iMacs, slot-loading iMacs and iMac Rev A-D systems. Many units are available for shipment now, and the others are expected to ship by mid-April.
MCE noted that when installed in a G4-based system, the new drives work with Apple’s DVD Studio Pro, iTunes 3 and Finder Burning. What’s more, they’ll also work with iDVD 3, according to MCE, although Apple doesn’t officially support such a configuration. G3-based systems like the older Power Macs, PowerBooks, iMacs and iBooks gain support for iTunes and Finder Burning; they also ship with a basic Mac OS 9-compatible DVD authoring software application that creates both video DVDs and Video CDs. (Users of such configurations will also gain an OS X application upgrade sometime in late April.)
All models ship with Roxio’s Toast Lite CD/DVD data burning software. Prices range from US$279 – $449 depending on the model. Visit MCE’s Web site for further details.
