Developers who need to create a software installer that works equally well under the older and newest Mac OS versions may be interested in
MindVision Software’s latest revision to its popular installer software, Installer VISE. The new version is ready for download from MindVision’s Web site.
Using Installer VISE, developers can create a software installer that works from System 7 through Mac OS X. The software creates a self-contained installer using simple drag-and-drop techniques, supports AppleScript, and has a variety of other features.
According to the online documentation, changes in the new version include:
Access privileges authentication — When an install requires special access privileges, Installer VISE can prompt the user for user name and password, and authenticate that information before proceeding. Extended updater support — Updater files included in Carbon or FAT Carbon installers will now run on Mac OS X. Force restarts from Mac OS X — When appropriate, Installer VISE installers can force a system restart from Mac OS X. Execute UNIX scripts from the installer — Installer VISE 7.2 can execute UNIX scripts from the installer on Mac OS X. Self-updating Web installers — When your customer launches a web installer that differs from the server version, a new installer is downloaded. This allows you to update your installer code, in addition to the products it delivers. Easier installer creation and modification — Items can be arranged in VISE archives by shift-clicking on multiple items and dragging them to a new location. Integrated e-commerce support — Installer VISE 7.2 now integrates a carbon version of eSellerate, an e-commerce tool kit.
