If you’re looking for an inkjet printer to complement your digital camera,
Epson has just released the 785EPX. The new printer incorporates Print Image Matching technology, and is compatible with digital camera memory cards, making it possible to print digital images without downloading them to a computer first.
The 785EPX sports 2880 x 720 dpi resolution and uses a six-color ink system. Epson says that the printer’s four-picoliter droplet size delivers continuous tone quality that is indistinguishable from a traditional photograph.
The 785EPX sports a built-in PC card slot that, with adapters, can be made compatible with CompactFlash Type I and II cards, Sony Memory Sticks, Secure Digital cards, SmartMedia cards, and IBM Microdrives. The printer comes with a CompactFlash Type I adapter, but users can exchange that card through Epson for either a Memory Stick or SmartMedia adapter if they require. The PC card slot can also be used as a card reader when the printer is connected to a PC or Mac — it uses USB to connect.
A control panel on the 785EPX enables you to adjust selections including paper type and size, number of copies, layout, various frames for sticker printing, and choice of quality settings. You can also adjust brightness and sharpness, and monochrome and sepia tones. An optional US$99 1.6-inch color preview monitor is also available, to enable you to see your images before you print them.
Print Image Matching is designed to work with digital cameras that also use the technology. With Print Image Matching, gamma level, color space, contrast, sharpness, brightness and other image data is maintained from the camera to the printer, to help keep accurate reproduction. Epson said that Print Image Matching-enable cameras would be available this spring and summer from various camera makers.
The 785EPX also features Epson’s BorderFree photo printing technology, which enables you to print borderless photos in sizes from 4 x 6 inches to 8 x 10 without perforations or the need to trim margins. Epson also has available a roll paper holder accessory to print multiple 4 x 6 inch snapshots or panoramas without wasting paper.
The 785EPX prints 4 x 6 inch photos in under a minute, and takes less than two minutes to print an 8 x 10 inch photo, according to Epson. The printer can also print out regular text at about 8 pages per minute.
Look for the Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX to hit stores this June. The new printer will carry an estimated street price of $249.
