“Simply put, the iMac has redefined the consumer and education computer, ushering in several industry firsts including USB, FireWire, desktop movies, wireless networking, quiet fan-less operation and world-class design,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “I look forward to shipping our ten millionth iMac in a few years.”
The iMac has set off design trends for a variety of products from pens to household appliances. Other computer makers have also tried to duplicate the iMac’s success by producing the all-in-one design themselves — to date nothing has been as successful as Apple’s original design.
Apple CFO, Fred Anderson, said during yesterday’s earnings conference call that Blue Dalmation iMacs accounted for approximately 20 percent of the total iMacs sold during the second quarter. New computer users comprise about 28 percent of the folks who purchase iMacs and Windows users make up around 15 percent, he added. These figures have held relatively consistent since the iMac’s debut.
