Greg Landweber has announced the release of a new version of SmoothType. The new version, 2.2.3, is available for download from his Web site.
SmoothType is a control panel device that provides font-smoothing capabilities to Macs running System 7.1 through Mac OS 9.1. It works in Classic, too. SmoothType works by anti-aliasing, or blurring the edges of bitmap fonts. Landweber compares SmoothType’s results as similar to how fonts look in applications that utilize Mac OS X’s “Quartz” graphics engine.
The new version of SmoothType improves kerning, fixes problems with Internet Explorer, DreamWeaver, and BBEdit, and also prevents its shareware reminder from appearing during the initial trial period.
System requirements call for a 68020 or better-equipped Mac; System 7 through Mac OS 9.1 (including Classic under OS X); PostScript or TrueType fonts; 8-bit color support or better. SmoothType is shareware — it costs US$10 to register.
