Aladdin Systems is shipping a StuffIt Engine Software Developer Kit (SDK), version 6.0.1 for Mac to make it easier for third-party software developers to put StuffIt technology in their own applications, whether they’re Mac OS X or Classic programs.
The carbonized StuffIt Engine has one application programming interface (API) to handle all the compression and encoding formats. By incorporating the StuffIt Engine libraries in any software application, developers can create or access StuffIt or Zip archives, add or remove encoding, or make self-extracting archives for Mac or Windows desktop users.
The StuffIt Engine SDK for Macintosh can be used to create the following file and archive types: StuffIt (including encrypted and/or segmented), Zip, Self-Extracting Archive for Macintosh, Self-Extracting Archive for Windows, Apple Single, Binhex, BtoA, Bzip, Gzip, Lha, MacBinary, Tar, and UU). The SDK can be used to expand or decode all of the above plus: Arc, CompactPro, MIME, PrivateFile, and RAR. It can even mount ShrinkWrap disk image files.
The Aladdin StuffIt Engine SDK is available for download from Aladdin’s Web site and is licensed directly from Aladdin. License fees vary by the “type and scope of the project,” the company said. The minimum operating system requirement for the StuffIt Engine SDK is System 7.5.3.
