U.S. Robotics, which provides Internet access and connectivity, is shipping a broadband router for sharing DSL or cable service with multiple computers in the home or office. The U.S. Robotics Broadband Router lets users share any DSL or cable Internet connection with up to four Macs or Wintel systems — or up to 253 computers with additional Ethernet hubs.
When networked through the router, multiple computers can also share data files, music and multi-player games. Unfortunately, the router offers more bang for the buck to Wintel users. PC owners can take advantage of a built-in print server that allows sharing of a single printer without the need for a dedicated PC. However, the print server isn’t available for Macs.
The router sports four 10/100 megabit-per-second (Mbps) Ethernet ports and a built-in serial port to connect an analog modem for backup Internet access. An additional 10/100 uplink Ethernet port allows connection to an Ethernet hub without special cables. The router has an estimated street price of US$149.99.
