If you’ve downloaded the just-released QuickTime 5.0.1, you may have noticed that there’s no Sorenson 3 codec included. It was there through the beta testing so what’s going on?
Nothing drastic, thankfully. Sorenson Media is in the process of locking down the gold master for Sorenson Video 3, according to Sorenson spokesperson Kimberly Feller.
“Due to last minute changes that needed to be made to the Sorenson 3 codec, we were unable to meet the deadlines for QuickTime 5,” she told MacCentral. “Most of these changes have since been completed and are now going through the QA process. Once approved, Sorenson Video 3 Standard Edition will be made available by Apple through registered users of QuickTime 5.”
Sorenson Video is a QuickTime compatible video codec designed for developers of applications or Web sites that require compressed video segments. Sorenson Video 3 will offer purportedly offer a significant increase in compression speed and quality over Sorenson Video 2. Also, the release of SV3 Professional Edition is expected within the next 30-60 days.
