The Digital Rights Management group of
— which provides security solutions for the Internet, e-commerce, and software protection — is now supporting Mac OS X in its Sentinel Eve3 software security solution. The Eve3 provides full software application security for X applications via an easy-to-use, easy-to-install USB security key, according to Robert Shields, senior director of strategic marketing.
Sentinel Eve3 is a protection system which uses a programmable hardware key. It offers programmable memory registers, programmable counters, algorithms for transforming values sent by an application, RAM for temporary data storage, and password protection for sensitive functions.
Programmable memory registers are memory cells that can be programmed with any value. Each Sentinel Eve3 contains 32 16-bit memory registers. Each Sentinel Eve3 key contains four 16-bit memory registers that can be used as counters. You preprogram the counter with a specific value; this value is then decremented by your protected application according to your needs.
Algorithms are registers in the hardware key that contain data used to transform 32-bit values sent by your application. Each Sentinel Eve3 contains four algorithms. Each Sentinel Eve3 key contains four bytes of random access memory that can be written and read by your application.
“Adding software security protection for new applications developed on the exciting new Mac OS X platform eliminates a potential source of lost revenue for our customers,” he added in a press announcement. “The Eve3 fully leverages the proven security technology of our Sentinel family of software-protection solutions in a form factor that is both easy-to-use and install.”
The Sentinel Eve3 is a member of Rainbow’s Sentinel family of software security keys. The Eve3 features a microprocessor for software protection for single-licensed or multiple-licensed applications. Users can configure password-protected memory as read/write cells, read-only cells or challenge/response registers. To maximize Mac application security, the Eve3 features proprietary algorithm descriptors that can be stored in the key, allowing users to protect multiple applications by assigning each package a unique algorithm.
“The Sentinel Eve3 is the industry’s leading solution for securing applications for the Macintosh platform,” Shields said. “The Eve3 provides a high degree of compatibility, reliability and security for Mac-based applications.”
