is shipping the Cobra+, which the company describes as the “fastest FireWire hard drive.” It’s a 7200 RPM drive, with burst transfer rates of up to 38MB/s and sustained rates of 34MB/s using a Power Mac G4 733MHz system.
“The video editing and desktop professional users demand greater performance and these drives deliver in spades”, said Ebrahim Zmehrir, president and CEO of EZQuest, in a press announcement. “We are excited to be the first manufacturer to ship FireWire Hard Drives with these incredible speeds.”
Looking for a RAID solution? The Cobra+ also ships with Intech Software’s speed tools formatting and RAID level 0 software, Hard Disk SpeedTools, an ATA and FireWire disk management utility. It combines disk configuration capabilities with testing features all in one package. Plus, with its built-in “Precision Driver” technology, Hard Disk SpeedTools will automatically build a custom-tuned device driver for your specific Mac model and operating environment.
Intech’s software enables users to stripe two or more Cobra+ FireWire Hard Drives. The Cobra+ also has dual 6-pin FireWire ports and an auto-switching power supply.
Pricing for the Cobra+ is as follows: $249 (20GB), $299 (40GB), $359 (60GB) and $499 (75GB). All drives are ship with a FireWire cable, the EZQuest EZ Start Up Kit, Intech’s Hard Disk SpeedTools and a 3-year warranty.
The new Cobra drive joins an existing family of FireWire products from EZQuest that includes CD-RWs and DVD-RAM drives. At January’s Macworld San Francisco, EZQuest announced the Boa FireWire RW and Boa FireWire 4.7GB DVD-RAM drives.
The Boa FireWire 16x10x40 CD-RW drive writes to CD-R disks at 16x speed, rewrites disks at 10x speed, and is capable of writing to blank 74min CD-Rs in less than five minutes. An internal 2MB memory buffer allows the drive to read CDs at 40x speed.
The CD-RW drive sells for US$379 and comes with Roxio Toast, Easy CD Creator, and blank CD-R and CD-RW disks. The Boa FireWire 4.7GB DVD-RAM model writes to one-sided 4.7GB and double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM disks, as well as all legacy DVD-RAM media. Supporting a maximum 16MB/sec transfer rate, the DVD-RAM drive is backward (read) compatible with CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, CD-DA, Video CD and DVD-ROM disks.
The DVD-RAM drive retails for $669 and comes with one 4.7GB disk and disk-formatting software.
