France-based Mac game developer MacRun Games has released Captain Bumper, a lighthearted side-scrolling arcade action game made exclusively for the Macintosh. The game features cartoon-style graphics, a custom soundtrack, and a high “twitch factor.”
You take control of Captain Bumper, a lantern-jawed hero on a mission to save the princess from the clutches of the vile alien Zeurbs. Captain Bumper navigates his spacecraft through a progression of more difficult levels as he seeks to save the princess. He’ll collect power ups to recharge his shield, fuel and ammunition as he travels across space, over the surface of a planet filled with strange and hostile alien life, through subterranean mazes, and across other challenges as well.
If you’re a fan of games from the 16-bit console era or if you liked coin-op arcade games of yore, you should definitely make sure to check this one out. Captain Bumper has some great production values, and it’s the first release from this new, enthusiastic Mac game developer and publisher.
System requirements for Captain Bumper call for a PowerPC-based Mac, but the company advises using a G3 or G4-based system for best performance. Other requirements include Mac OS 8.6 or later and 42MB of available RAM. MacRun indicates that a Carbonized version of the game is in the works, too, but in the interim, it’ll work on Mac OS X as a Classic application.
A two-level demo version of the game is available from links on MacRun’s Web site. The title can then be registered for US$25, enabling users to download a supplement to obtain the complete game. More details are available from MacRun.
