It appears that a new preview version of QuickTime Streaming Server is now in circulation — Apple’s Web site shows a new version of the software ready for download with a modification date of May 11.
QuickTime Streaming Server supports RTSP, or Real Time Streaming Protocol. The software enables you to use a Power Mac G4 running Mac OS X to stream QuickTime media files on the Internet or intranets. The software can provide video on demand, serving local files stored on the server, and can also act as a reflector for live broadcasts.
The current release version of QuickTime Streaming Server is 2.0.1, but publicly available “preview” versions of QuickTime Streaming Server 3 have been available for download for months.
QuickTime Streaming Server 3 sports features like Web-based administration and “Skip” protection. Apple says that pairing QTSS 3 with its recently released QuickTime 5 client software provides the best results.
Minimum system requirements call for a Power Mac G3 or better running Mac OS X. Please visit the QuickTime Streaming Server Web page at the URL above for more info.
