If you want a quiet computer, Apple is the only company that sells off-the-shelf systems designed for quiet operation, Wall Street Journal columnist Walter Mossberg says in a new Personal Technical column.
“Some companies, such as Quietpc.com in the United Kingdom, offer various ‘quiet’ components you can install if you’re technical,” he said. “But most modern Windows computers generate so much internal heat that fans are required.”
As Apple fans know, iMac and the G4 Cube were specifically designed without a fan. As a result they’re quieter than other systems.
“Given the health risks of the higher stress levels you report, I’d strongly suggest you buy one of these Macs, even though you might have to replace some of your peripheral hardware,” Mossberg recommends.
