dvGarage, a company dedicated to training the next generation of visual media artists and whose site is QuickTime only, has a new tutorial on “reflections.”
Alex Lindsay, co-founder of dvGarage and a former member of Industrial Light and Magic’s Rebel Mac Unit, continues the weekly tutorial series with an animated step-by-step process of precise placement of reflections using specialized environment maps. The process vastly reduces the time required to place specific elements in a reflection at any point in an animation, he told MacCentral.
“Believe me, this little trick will saves hours of test renders with a visual solution for a technical problem,” he said. “This tutorial will make a difference for nearly any 3D artist.”
The site’s series revolves around daily and weekly streaming video tutorials observing the real world in its every nuance and then looking at strategies to recreate that reality, according to Lindsay. The media-rich site does all of this through highly visual and easy-to-understand terms, he added.
“We’re focused on training people’s eyes, not their fingers,” Lindsay said, explaining the site’s platform and application agnostic approach to training. “Training someone to push buttons is not difficult but training them to see what’s missing is a much greater challenge.”
