Netscape has released a new “preview release” version of its Internet communications software, Netscape 6.1. The new version, Netscape 6.1PR1, can be downloaded from the company’s Web site.
Among the improvements to Netscape 6.1PR1 are:
Enhanced performance – faster page loading and web browsing.
Enhanced bookmark and history management-easier filing, sorting, deleting and editing.
Better searching — easier navigation and the ability to search from an autocomplete URL dropdown.
Better downloading — easier, more intuitive support for helper applications and ability to locate and launch downloads directly from the download dialog box.
Support for Hebrew.
More versatile form management-the new Form Manager lets you presupply form information or cache it after filling out a form.
Better security — the Password Manager and the Cookie Manager give improved control over critical information.
Enhanced performance — faster outlining and mail management.
Offline capability — use Netscape Mail 6.1 to access all server-based mail accounts offline.
Easy account management — centralized control and monitoring of all e-mail accounts.
Netscape indicates that this preview release version is being released without support, and the software is not in its final form. Netscape advises users interested in downloading the new version to install it in a separate directory from their existing Netscape installation. Users are also advised to read the
prior to downloading and installing Netscape 6.1PR1.
System requirements call for Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS 9; PowerPC 604e/266MHz or faster; 64MB RAM; and 36MB available HD space. Please be advised that the download link below will download a small Installer application, which will then require you to download the full Netscape 6.1PR1 installation.
