Id Software released a new beta build of Quake 3 Arena earlier this week, but the initial build was available only for Mac OS X — a change of pace from earlier official releases, which had been offered by Id for “Classic” versions of Mac OS.
“A Mac ‘Classic’ release is not available at this time, but we will have an official release when this release moves out of a beta state,” stated the Id Software Web site.
It may not be “official,” but Id Software designer/project manager Graeme Devine recently updated his .plan file to let Mac users know that he has released a new build of Quake 3 Arena 1.29f beta designed to work on versions of Mac OS prior to Mac OS X.
“I have not had time to make an installer, or extensively test this build. SO IT MIGHT NOT WORK. However, because of user demand I am making it available ASAP,” said Devine.
The new build of Quake 3 Arena for Mac OS versions prior to X, 1.29f beta, can be downloaded by FTP from Id Software’s servers. File size is around 25.4MB. If you’re looking for the Mac OS X version, you can download it here instead. It’s about 25.1MB.
