While Macworld Conference & Expo will be in full swing on the East Coast later this month, there’s another event happening on the West Coast — the 5th Annual Webby Awards. The event takes place on the evening of July 18, 2001 at San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House.
The Webby Awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and this year’s event will be MC’d by actor Alan Cumming. The event features special guest presenters and live performances in what its coordinators call a “circus-like show.” One interesting twist to the Webbys is that award winners must limit their acceptance speeches to five words.
Award-winning filmmakers have produced more than 18 original short films and animations created especially for the event. Aardman Animation — makers of Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run — will debut their film “And the Webby Goes to Animation” at this year’s event. Sam Donaldson will also be on hand to bring the Webbys live to audiences via abcnews.com.
Two awards are presented in each category — the Webby Award, whose nominees and winners are judged by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and the People’s Voice Award, which is determined by the online community itself.
The 2001 Webby Awards features 27 categories, including two new categories, Government & Law and Spirituality. The complete list of categories is: Activism, Broadband, Commerce, Community, Education, Fashion, Film, Finance, Games, Government & Law, Health, Humor, Kids, Living, Music, News, Personal Web Sites, Politics, Print & Zines, Radio, Science, Services, Spirituality, Sports, TV, Travel, and Weird.
