(For those new to the column, Forward Migration is our term for companies moving from Wintel machines to Macs — or at least adding or increasing the number of Macs they use. A forward migration kit is an overview of Mac OS products for a particular occupation, such as dentistry, accounting, etc.)
This week we’ll conclude our look at insurance software for the Mac. Some of the products mentioned came from MacCentral readers, while others were found at Apple Products Guide, an invaluable resource. Let’s’ look at the products in alphabetical order:
Medifile
MediFile by Jonoke Software Development is a patient care and clinic administration tool. Its many features include the ability to schedule appointments; administrate billings (health insurance claims, direct and third party billings); accounting reports; word processor integrated with the data file to generate automated invoices, referral letters, medical-legal reports, and more. Electronic patient records include pictures (x-rays, ultrasounds, QuickTake photos, scans, sketches), SOAP notes, lab results, prescriptions, allergies, referrals, and more. There are single and multi-user versions, as well as two levels of password security.
OPTIX Workflow
OPTIX Workflow by Mindwrap lets you move documents electronically and automatically along a user-definable routing path. It’s cross platform, and can be used to help a large insurance company that receives thousands of claims every day. How? Consider this scenario: Perhaps these forms are scanned in a mailroom, then the images are routed from workstation to workstation — automatically — through as many steps as it takes to process the claims.
A user at one step might wish to view the scanned images and add a document to the electronic “package.” The next user, perhaps in another building across town, might wish to add a spreadsheet. When that user is done, he or she simply hits the “Next” button and the documents are automatically routed to the next person listed on the route. The route can be as simple, or as complex, as your business requires. Server support requires Windows NT/2000, UNIX or Linux, but the client has Mac support.
Personal RecordKeeper
Personal RecordKeeper by Nolo Press helps you organize financial, real estate, legal, medical and insurance information. It includes income sources, pensions, retirement accounts, copyrights, patents, home inventory, tax records, credit cards, death, illness, estate plans and more.
Ritz Payroll by Ritz Software is time saving software with full payroll capabilities including any number of employees, all pay frequencies; departmental analysis; statutory sick pay and maternity pay; free of tax pay; profit related pay; K codes; Directors National Insurance; GIRO, Nat West Autopay and BOBS; and Inland Revenue approval for magnetic media year end returns. No pre-printed stationery is required.
ShrinkRapt
ShrinkRapt by Saner Software is a billing and insurance program that has been used by mental health practitioners since 1989. It prepares client-billing statements and completes the entire HCFA 1500 claim form for insurance filing. Other features include referral source tracking, managed care alerts, bank deposit slips, insurance tracking and session notes. An appointment-scheduling module that is fully integrated with billing is also available. Technical support is free and available by phone, fax and email. A fully functional demo package available for US $10.
TessSystem Three
TessSystem Three by Tess Data Systems is one of the first medical office management products to become available for the Mac 15 years ago. It’s designed for billing, insurance, accounts receivable control, appointment scheduling, management reports and electronic claims. It also includes a prescription management module. TessSystem Three can be used for single as well as multi-doctor offices, and can be networked.
Trial De Novo
Trial De Novo by De Novo Systems is a single or multi-user application for complete litigation case management. It’s designed for general litigation with emphasis on personal injury and domestic relations.
