Storage product maker LaCie has announced a diminutive DVD-ROM drive designed to be portable enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The drive features both FireWire and USB support.
The PocketDVD-ROM drive features 8x speed, enabling DVD data to be transferred up speeds up to 10.8MB/sec. It also reads discs at 24x. The drive’s seek time is 150ms for DVDs and 110ms for CDs.
The PocketDVD-ROM can work in bus-powered mode when used with a FireWire-equipped system. LaCie also provides an international power supply for when the drive is used with USB. LaCie’s own U&I interface automatically senses which interface is being used and configures the PocketDVD-ROM accordingly. The drive sports a blue and grey enclosure, with a groove in the side to help hid cables.
The PocketDVD-ROM is available through LaCie’s retailers and carries a suggested retail price of US$299. A $30 mail-in rebate is also available. The drive comes equipped with FireWire and USB cables.
LaCie is exhibiting at this week’s Macworld Expo at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York, in booth 1913.
