If you’re a big fan of Bungie Software’s classic first person shooter game Marathon, and you’ve longed for something that has the same style of action but a more up to date 3D engine, your wait is over. Some crafty developers called Team Unpfhorgiven (you Marathon junkies know it’s a play on words) have created Marathon: Resurrection a mod for Unreal Tournament that brings level designs, textures, weapons and sound effects inspired by Marathon, to help bring the Marathon experience into the modern age.
Unreal Tournament is a popular first person shooter published for the Macintosh by MacSoft. Thanks to a modular architecture, the game can support a wide variety of third-party add-ons (called Mods) which can consist of new level designs, new weapons and physics models, and new sound effects and textures — enabling designers with the appropriate tools to create entirely new games using the same core engine. Marathon: Resurrection is just such an effort. The team admits they haven’t stayed purely canonical to the original Marathon, but as you can tell from the screenshot above, it’s true to form.
The mod is about 66MB in size, and can be downloaded from various archives around the Web. It’s free to download and use — if you’re interested in checking it out, visit the Marathon: Resurrection Web site today for more info.
