Smith Micro Software Inc. today released an updated version of VideoLink Pro for the Mac. The videoconferencing software utilizes H.323 standards, enabling VideoLink Pro users to communicate with other Mac and PC users who are running H.323-compliant products. The company also incorporated support for H.261 video compression. The new version now supports VideoLink World, a free Internet service that enables users to meet online. The Web site enables VideoLink Pro users and users of other H.323 products to create public or private meeting rooms and more.
Smith Micro said that VideoLink Pro and similar products are proving particularly popular in high-speed networking environments in education communities.
Other features include QuickTime 4 integration, a “call listening” mini applet that runs in the background and waits for an inbound call, CheckIt Firewall Sensor, which detects any blocking firewalls that might interfere with videoconferencing, and more.
VideoLink Pro requires a PowerPC G3 or better-equipped Mac; Mac OS 8.6 or later; QuickTime 3.0 or higher; an Internet connection (broadband or LAN recommended); 15MB available RAM; 15MB HD space; and a USB or FireWire-equipped Webcam. (Smith Micro maintains a list of supported cameras.) The software costs US$59.95, and can be purchased either for download or as a physical shipment.
