told you it was coming. Now it’s here.
Timbuktu is the remote control and file transfer software for the Mac operating system. Version 6.0 has been Carbonized to run on Apple’s new operating system, as well as Mac OS 8.6/9.x with the CarbonLib extensions installed.
Timbuktu users can connect any combination of Mac or Windows computers via a network, or over the Internet. Functions include full remote control, observe only, file exchange, text chat, instant messaging, and voice intercom.
The new OS X version of Timbuktu Pro sports news features, including package distribution, added security, large file support and support for Mac OS X’s Aqua interface. Netopia says that Timbuktu Pro for Mac OS X’s basic remote control, communications and file transfer functions are also backwards compatible through two previous versions.
Multiple Access Mode technology supports all Internet, local area network, wide area network, dial-up and direct dial connections. As of the new upgrade, Timbuktu offers a Doc View, support for file and folder permissions and an Aqua Interface.
As of version 6.0, the Connections menu is now a small, floating icon, which initially appears in the farthest upper-right corner of your screen. You can move this icon anywhere on your screen or menu bar by holding down the Control key and clicking on it.
There’s no longer a “Timbuktu Extension.” Instead, there’s a small, invisible Timbuktu Host, which is in the background listening for connections. When you restart your Mac, the host will be available even before you log in (if you use the login screen). You can turn off incoming access if you don’t want anyone connecting to you, just as in older versions of Timbuktu.
Timbuktu Pro now requires an activation key. Every valid, licensed copy of Timbuktu Pro for Mac OS is provided with a unique activation key. You must enter this activation key in order for Timbuktu Pro to run correctly.
Unlike in previous versions of Timbuktu, the online Help doesn’t automatically open the first time you launch Timbuktu Pro. To view online Help, choose “Timbuktu Help” from the Help menu.
Timbuktu Pro for Mac OS X is currently available for sale for US$29.95. See the
